This week in freelancing
This week I wrote two articles for my healthcare client, one about UTIs and another about foot pain after running, clocked 2200 words on project management for my software client, and worked on some other client-related odds and ends.
I’m in a phase right now where I’m up to my eyeballs in deadlines and working around 10 hours a day Monday – Friday, plus another 8-10+ hours over the weekend to get the work done and turn things in on time.
I can see light at the end of the tunnel, though, and my schedule will go back to a more “normal” pace and fewer weekly work hours in the not-too-distant future.
And to that I say … Yeehaw! 😎

Trailblazing Women in Media: Amanda Zamora*
(*I originally shared this mini-profile in The Subhead #16. It’s been edited and updated for this issue.)
Amanda Zamora is Founder & Principal of Agencia Media, LLC, a consultancy that “partners with organizations to drive narrative change and civic engagement, especially with and for communities of color.”
I first came to know of Zamora through the non-profit newsroom and publication she co-founded, The 19th, which covers gender, politics and policy. She now serves as strategic adviser to the organization.
Zamora, a longtime journalist, has worked at newsrooms including the Texas Tribune, ProPublica, and The Washington Post. She’s a board member of the American Press Institute and Chicas Poderosas.
If you’re a nerd like me, you might enjoy this interview with Zamora, where she discusses women’s representation in journalism, the mission of The 19th, and her hopes for the next generation of women entering the field, among other things.
Favorite quote from this interview:
“. . . I am committed to being the best professional pain in the ass that I can be to do my part to help change the game.”
You can learn more about Zamora at the inline links above, and / or:
:: Learn about the consultancy Zamora launched, Agencia Media, and the services she offers.
:: Read some of her previous work at The Texas Tribune here.
:: Listen to her discuss launching a news brand about women and politics on the Media Voices podcast here (this episode is from 2020).
:: Listen to Zamora and her The 19th co-founder, Emily Ramshaw, talk about the origins of their independent, nonprofit newsroom here.

Copy Resource of the Week: Marketing Psychology, Email Marketing Tutorials & Copywriting Exercises, Oh My!
I rarely share video content in the Copy Resource of the Week section, so I thought I’d change it up this time for those who prefer video over reading.
If you spend any time on YouTube looking for personal branding or copywriting advice, there’s a good chance you’ve come across Alex Cattoni.
She’s got a super-helpful YouTube channel where she shares:
:: How to write sales copy (we all need to know how to do this for our own projects & businesses!)
:: Email marketing tutorials, including proven email templates, advice for writing emails that convert, and insights on email marketing trends
:: Marketing and sales psychology: concepts, tips & triggers (i.e., learn how to get inside the mind of your customers to create trust, rapport and sales)
:: Branding, content marketing & social media tips
:: Hands-on guided copywriting exercises and tips for beginners
And more!

35 Simple Health Tips Experts Swear By [New York Times gift link]
In this New York Times article, reporters went back to leading specialists they’d interviewed over the years and asked them: What is the one health tip you learned in your work that you swear by?
These 35 tricks, life hacks, rules and reminders span nutrition, sleep, mental health, fitness, sex, productivity and more. They all meet the New York Times Well section standard for excellence with a little extra credibility — they are practiced by the people who preach them.
As a coffee lover, this tip was my favorite:
“What is a societally condoned dietary constituent that helps prevent liver disease, makes you alert and does not need to break the bank? Coffee! The cheapest brewed coffee with the lowest number of additives helps the brain, liver and microbiota.”
Dr. Jasmohan S. Bajaj, Hepatologist and professor at Virginia Commonwealth University
(Next time I order coffee at my local hangout, I’m going to ask for a big, steaming cup of “societally condoned dietary constituent.”) 😂

That’s it for this week, my friend.
As always, thanks for reading, I appreciate you!
Be well. Stay curious. See you again in two weeks, on May 11.
Warmly,
